Web Video Means NBC May Be SOL PDQ, IMHO

Web video has been cutting deeper and deeper in to television ratings, and NBC seems the hardest hit. A week after record lows, NBC under-did themselves again by breaking the record again the following week, averaging only 6.2 million last week, according to Nielsen Media Research.

All broadcast television is down 10%, but NBC is down as much as 30% according to some analysts.

Old shows like “Law & Order” and “The Apprentice” aren’t helping, but the real problem is that their best shows still aren’t very good. The insufferable “Deal or No Deal” was their top-rated show, but only came in #16 for the week. “The Office”, “30 Rock” and “Scrubs”, while popular with the critics, still aren’t popular with the slightly more important “people who watch television” demographic.

Even “Heroes” has been a bit of a villain, but the way the show drags interminably on without ever giving viewers satisfaction, it’s easy to see why its return didn’t even pull the ratings it used to average before taking yet another unnecessary and unforgivably long break.

Marc Berman, a television analyst for Media Week Online, said, “They are just in a complete mess. They coasted on Thursdays for over a full decade and they can’t do it anymore. What are they going to do now? They’re in a lot of trouble.”
