The BBC reports that two roadies were killed dismantling the stage after a concert in Madrid. Two other roadies were injured.A spokesman for the Rolling Stones said that “their heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery go out to the injured and their profound sympathies to the deceased.”

Obviously the Rolling Stones need a new spokesman, because it doesn’t matter what Keith Richards belched up after the incident, it’s the spokesman’s job to make sense of it and interpret it in the best possible light for the public.

Sending out your “profound sympathies to the deceased” is much like standing on the street and talking to a parking meter. Or sending a letter to Santa Claus. Or voting in America. It’s a pointless gesture without effect. The “deceased” are dead, and thus have no regard for PR statements.

However, if the Stones were to put dead flowers on their graves, that would be some rock ‘n roll magic.
