Michael Moore is under investigation for allegedly taking 10 ground-zero sickened rescue workers to Cuba for treatment, a claim the Oscar decorated documentary filmmaker has denied through a spokesman. The strict no-travel rules pertaining to Cuba do not apply to journalists, but rather than request evidence of his status at the time of the visit, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) informed Moore that he is under investigation for embargo violation, and that he may spend ten-years in jail, even if he fully cooperates with the probe. It’s the kind of publicity money just can’t buy.
Moore issued a letter to Treasury secretary Henry Paulson, which stated, “I believe that the decision to conduct this investigation represents the latest example of the Bush Administration abusing the federal government for raw, crass, political purposes. Over the last seven years of the Bush presidency, we have seen the abuse of government to promote a political agenda designed to benefit the conservative base of the Republican party, special interests and major financial contributors.
“From holding secret meetings for the energy industry to re-writing science findings to cooking the books on intelligence to the firing of U.S. Attorneys, this administration has shown time and time again that it will abuse its power and authority.”
His upcoming film Sicko, which hopes to tear-into the US health industry the way “Bowling for Columbine” hit the gun-rights lobby, and Fahrenheit 9/11 went after the Bush Whitehouse, is scheduled for wide release in the US on June 29th. What with all this free press, the release may even be wider than Michael Moore himself.
