The BBC reports Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick as saying that “today we’re not just burying the N-word, we’re taking it out of our spirit”.

The move has caused controversy and widespread protest in the entertainment industry.

A spokesman for Skullfuck Entertainment says,

“This irresponsible move on the part of the NAACP has grave consequences for the entertainment industry, and threatens to jeopoardize the careers of thousands of gangsta rappers who rely on the N-Word to shout out to their brothers and to fuel the intercoastal violence so integral to the success of rap music today.”

Responding to these criticisms from the music industry, the NAACP published a list of acceptable alternative words and phrases to replace the N-Word in rap lyrics, which include:

My dear friend
Old bean
Chap
Buddy
Mate
Most disrespected enemy
Potential foe

Though some rappers resist the new list of pre-approved N-Word replacements, many rappers welcome the change.

An anonymous rapper reports, “This shit for real, dog. Can’t be out slingin’ rock and tappin’ hoes wit numerous disrespected enemies stealin’ ya game, old bean. Dis a black thing, my good chap. A muthafuckin’ black thing, mate.”
