Monty Python’s John Cleese On New Zealand: “it’s the suicide capital of Australia”
The apparently humorless town of Palmerston North, New Zealand isn’t just the place John Cleese called the
“suicide capital of Australia”, but now it’s actually known for something. After last year’s appearance by the world-famous comic, who didn’t much care for the town or its people, they’ve decided to name the city dump after him. You know, because I’m sure he cares.
The 67-year-old comedian offended the townsfolk more by referring to their city as a town than they offended him by not laughing at any of his jokes. The villagers, or village idiots, if you prefer, have put in place an unofficial sign beside the decidedly eco-unfriendly landfill reading “Mt. Cleese”… apparently missing the irony that a town known for nothing, is now known for naming a garbage pile.
If only John Cleese had no sense of humor, wasn’t rich, had no life and had any wish at all to ever go back to that collection of farming hovels, this might actually have an impact.
